Torah Readings for the Latter Days of Passover

On the SEVENTH DAY OF PASSOVER we read how on this day the sea split for the Children of Israel and drowned the pursuing Egyptians, and the "Song at the Sea" sung by the people upon their deliverance (Exodus 13:27-15:26; click here for full-length summary with commentary ).

On the EIGHTH DAY OF PASSOVER we read Deuteronomy 15:19-16:17. Like the reading for the second day, it catalogs the annual cycle of festivals, their special observances, and the offerings brought on these occasions to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The Eighth Day's special connection with the Future Redemption is reflected in the Haftorah (reading from the Prophets) for this day (Isaiah 10:32-12:6).

To Our Army Officer I read your comment, Lt. Kressel and the Torah teaches that when the Children of Israel began celebrating the deaths of Pharoah's army, Hashem reprimanded them by saying he mourned their loss as they too were G-d's children. Your instincts were spot on. Reply

To Avraham Think of the Torah as spiritual medicine for your soul. Every once in a while, you need a good dose to keep your neshamah healthy. The Torah readings are hand-picked for what your soul needs at that time of the year. But you cannot just sit in shul and expect the meds to somehow find their way into you. Read them and study them, and they'll be internalized just right. Reply

I am a Jew and a retired career Army officer. I have never celebrated the death of an enemy and tried to teach that idea to my troops. It is a great miracle and blessing G-D saved the Jews from the Egyptians. We should say a prayer even for those lost souls as well as gratitude for our being saved.

That’s why the first Seder is not on the 7th day which is the crossing of the sea. Although that would in a way make more sense, it would not be befitting to have the main celebration on the day that resulted in that loss of life. It’s a core Jewish belief not to celebrate the death of enemies.
